Diving the Area and Shipwrecks: the Vamar
There are a number of good diving locations off our coast including artificial reefs, shipwrecks, and Air Force signal Towers are just a few of the dive sites you will want to visit.
About 45 minutes to 1 hour to the west of Carrabelle on Highway 98 are the towns of Port St. Joe and Mexico Beach, where you can dive the first of 12 exciting shipwrecks along the Florida Panhandle Trail: the Vamar.
The Vamar was made famous as a support ship for Admiral Richard Byrd’s 1928 Antarctic expedition, and sunk under mysterious circumstances during a trip to carry lumber to Cuba in 1942. The Vamar now lies in just 25 feet of water, offering a large steam engine, bilge keels and a wide variety of marine life for divers and snorkelers.
