Camp Gordon Johnston
Camp Gordon Johnston opened in 1942 for the sole purpose of training amphibious soldiers and their support groups. This camp trained a quarter of a million men, closing in June of 1946.
As of January 5th, 2009, the Museum has moved to the new Carrabelle City Complex on Gray Avenue in Carrabelle, Florida. Our new, larger location includes open areas for displays, a video theatre, gift shop and more! Additionally, we have our WWII vehicles located in the automotive bays next to the museum. As before, admission is by donation.
Our new facility features increased space to showcase Franklin County’s WWII history as well as Florida's World Wartime history. Clean rest rooms, handicap access and over 5,000 feet housing displays, photos, models, artifacts, uniforms and a typical barracks room from the camp all await the visitor/tourist. The Smithsonian Museum has selected our museum to take part in the National Museum Days upcoming in September. We also honor all our veterans every second weekend in March by hosting community activities, including the annual Camp Gordon Johnston Days Parade and Dinner-Dance.
We encourage you to visit this nationally known little museum and renew your feelings of pride in America’s efforts during those dark uncertain days of WWII. To download directions to the museum and learn more about the museum, visit us at: www.campgordonjohnston.com
